Microsoft has announced that it will bring one of the best features of the Xbox Series X to the PC: Auto HDR.

This visual boosting feature was announced for the Series X in November 2020, but has not been available on PCs until now. However, Microsoft recently confirmed in a blog post that Auto HDR has been added to the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview Build.

This feature adds enhanced tone mapping and adds detail to the light and dark of digital images, providing a richer visual experience for gaming. It also expands the range of color and luminance.

Confused by all the jargon? It's not. Microsoft has released a comparison image using the popular Gears 5 shooter game to demonstrate the significant improvements that Auto HDR brings.

This feature improves the visual fidelity of over 1,000 previously released DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games. A comprehensive list is not yet available, but it is safe to assume that most flagship Xbox titles will support this feature.

The best thing about Auto HDR is that, as its name suggests, it is automatic. So if you toggle the toggle in Windows' HD Color Settings, any future games that support the HDR feature will be HDR-enhanced without you having to do anything.

To take advantage of this feature, you will need to join the Windows Insider program, but once you do, enabling Auto HDR is a simple process. Alternatively, this feature will likely be included in a future Windows 10 update, so if you don't mind waiting a bit, it should be available to all users in the near future.
