Rocket League is finally coming to iOS and Android - and it's free

Rocket League brings its unique brand of ballgame-playing vehicles to a mobile device near you. A new Rocket League Sideswipe version will be available for both iOS and Android devices.

The Android beta launched today, with future beta launches and a full rollout for Google's mobile operating system and iOS planned for later in the year.

One of the main differences of this new mobile-focused game is the very short match duration. Players play car soccer for a few minutes, either one-on-one or two-on-two.

Of course, you can also play online against friends from all over the world or immediately against strangers. A ranking system for competitive play is also available.

According to developer Psyonix, the game is perfectly designed for handheld gaming devices and naturally supports touch controls.

Initial testing of Sideswipe is currently taking place on Android devices in Australia and New Zealand; according to Psyonix, this regional testing will later be rolled out to other regions.

According to Psyonix, the game is free to play in base, which is not surprising given that PC games have adopted this model. It also follows the model of other games such as Call of Duty Mobile and PUBG, both of which have PC or console equivalents but have been ported to iOS and Android as free-to-play games through microtransactions.

Here's one nice little tidbit: Psyonix is owned by Epic Games, and the company directly confirmed in a press release that Sideswipe is coming to iOS, if the Epic subsidiary can make money on microtransactions, appears ready to abandon its long-standing dispute with Apple.
