Leaked information on Samsung's Galaxy Watch 4 hasn't revealed much so far, but we may have learned how the next-generation smartwatch will be powered.

According to Korean tech site The Elec, the Galaxy Watch 4 will have a 240mAh battery in the 41mm model and a 350mAh battery in the 45mm model. These capacities differ slightly from Samsung's Galaxy Watch 3 lineup, which used 247mAh and 340mAh batteries, respectively.

The Elec did not mention why the battery capacities were changed on the new Galaxy Watch, but the site did reveal that Samsung is using a third-party supplier for components in the 45mm model; in the 41mm model, Samsung SDI supplies the battery, but the larger option will reportedly use a battery from China's Amperex Technology Limited (ATL) The Elec does not say whether this spec leak will also apply to the rumored Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 4 It is not clear whether or not this applies to the rumored Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 4.

So what do these different battery capacities mean? The variance in specs is so small that it is hard to imagine that the battery life of the Galaxy Watch 4 will be any better or worse than that of the previous Galaxy Watch, at least based on battery capacity alone.

Instead, the power demands of the display, chip, or other internal circuitry could alter the official battery life estimates for the Galaxy Watch. It is possible that the next Galaxy Watch will have exactly the same battery life as last year's model.

Of course, we hope not. We were disappointed about the battery life of the Galaxy Watch 3, which Samsung said should last up to two days. Based on display settings and activity, we ended up charging our tester every 24 hours.

The original Samsung Galaxy Watch lasted up to four days, blowing away the Apple Watch's 18-hour battery life at the time. Today, the two main smartwatches, the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Apple Watch Series 6, are almost neck-and-neck in terms of stamina.

If Samsung's smartwatch again lasts longer than Apple's, that would be a huge advantage.

For now, there is no reason to doubt that the Apple Watch 7's battery life will be extended. That may change as we get closer to the launch of the new smartwatch flagship models. Both are expected to arrive last summer or early fall. In the past, updates to the Galaxy Watch have come in August, while new generations of the Apple Watch have typically been announced in September.
