Sony Promises More PS5 Exclusivity "Than Ever" to Beat Xbox Series X

Sony Promises More PS5 Exclusivity "Than Ever" to Beat Xbox Series X

If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a PS5, you can bet that the new console will have plenty of exclusive titles to choose from. In a recent interview with Japan's Nikkei newspaper (translated by Video Games Chronicle), Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, claimed that Sony is "quietly...preparing more exclusive software than ever before for the PS5 generation, But steadily, we are investing in high-quality games for PlayStation.

This is significant because competing console maker Microsoft has acquired major studios like Bethesda and Obsidian in recent years and brought their game catalogs to the Xbox.

Exclusive games have historically been an important part of console makers' marketing strategies, and in recent years Sony has been a major player with Naughty Dog's "The Last Of Us," Sony Santa Monica's "God of War," Guerrilla Games' "Horizon Zero Dawn" have been big-budget PlayStation exclusives that have been released with great success.

However, the flow of critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusives has recently slowed, and following Microsoft's aggressive acquisition campaign, Ryan told The Nikkei that Sony is open to acquiring more game developers.

"We've been doing a lot of M&A, including Insomniac Games in the US," Ryan reportedly said, referring to Sony's 2020 acquisition of Marvel's Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games." We are not going to rule out that option in the future."

The company currently has a number of PlayStation-exclusive games scheduled for release this year, including Insomniac's "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart," Guerrilla's "Horizon Forbidden West," Sony Santa Monica 's God of War Ragnarok, etc. Given that many titles have been delayed due to problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it remains to be seen if all of these games will be released on time.

The pandemic has also contributed to a shortage of the PlayStation 5, which launched last November and was considered by the NPD Group to be the fastest-selling game console in US history. Ryan reassured Nikkei that the company is working on the PS5 supply issue.

"Supply under the new coronavirus was very complicated and we had to limit ourselves to online distribution. Supply and demand for semiconductors is also tight worldwide," Ryan said. We have asked our suppliers to allow us to increase production, which will flow into the market by the end of this year."

In the meantime, today we bring you the latest restocking information on the PS5.
