Sony has finally added 1080p support to its PlayStation Now game streaming service. This is great news for those who want to play PS-exclusive software without having to pay for it or buy a console. According to Sony, the update will be available this week, but it may be a few weeks before it is available to all.

The big problem for Sony is that Now is considerably inferior to Microsoft's streaming service: the Xbox Cloud Gaming service is included in Game Pass Ultimate, which costs $15/month; PS Now is $10 (or even cheaper if you pay a year in advance). (It's even cheaper if you pay in advance for a year). Microsoft is also currently testing 1080p support, which will probably begin once the service is out of beta.

If you've played PS Now on a PC, you've probably experienced some of its quirks. The interface is not very good, and there are some odd issues, such as deinterlacing glitches and blinking screens. Hopefully Sony has found new energy to catch up with other services.

For those who have a PC without a PS Now account or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, there are services like GeForce Now, which allows you to add some titles from your existing Steam library or other platforms. This also supports 1080p and, if you are prepared to pay for the service, RTX.

Whatever the problems with these services, there are real benefits for customers here. Over time, we will undoubtedly see a transition to streaming and performance improvements, and even if you don't own a PS5, you will certainly be able to enjoy some of Sony's best exclusive titles.
