Want to buy an accessory for your air tag? You can drill a hole in your tracker and use that instead. But just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Demolition expert iFixit was able to drill a hole in the AirTag without damaging any critical components. The only thing that was punctured was the plastic and glue, and the tracker still worked afterward. But of course, doing this would have ruined the warranty.

Obviously, drilling holes in the wrong places could cause damage and ruin the $29 AirTag forever. Apple will want you to purchase some sort of AirTag accessory to attach the AirTag to things, and that is the safest way to go. [iFixit also has a handy diagram of a "safe zone" where you can drill holes in the tracker to attach chains, key chains, etc.

As you can see, there are several options, but no major errors. However, if you have a 1/16" drill bit and pay close attention, this is actually possible.

Just remember to remove the battery first. If anything, this is another reason not to do it. Listen to Jeff Goldblum in "Jurassic Park" and remember to stop and think about whether you should or should not be distracted by whether you can do something.

Should Apple have added a hole or clip for a keychain? Perhaps the existing AirTags design appears to have room for a key ring. This would have not only added a bit more versatility to the tracker, but would have eliminated the need to purchase an expensive accessory.

That doesn't mean Apple and other third parties can't sell AirTag accessories. There will always be people who want to personalize their gadgets, and Air Tag accessories give them that option.

However, a dedicated key clip would allow people to get more use out of their tags without paying more than the $29 entry fee. Perhaps the Air Tag 2 will have it.
