Mass Effect Legend Edition runs best on Xbox Series X - Sorry, PS5

Ahead of next week's launch of Mass Effect Legendary Edition, BioWare has outlined how the title will perform on the system. The former will prioritize the highest possible level of visual fidelity, while the latter will focus on stable frame rates at the expense of some graphical features.

A complete breakdown of the technical targets for each mode on each platform can be found below, but what is immediately noticeable is that gamers playing on PS4 or Xbox One can still enjoy the entire "Mass Effect" trilogy with various graphical enhancements at 60 frames per seconds, which means they can enjoy the game at 60 frames per second.

The best console experience, unsurprisingly, will be if you are fortunate enough to have a PS5 or Xbox Series X.

In quality mode, you can enjoy all three films in the collection in 4K at 60fps. However, the Xbox Series X's "favor performance" mode further improves the frame rate to 120 fps at 1440p, whereas the PS5 only gets 60 fps at 1440p.

This discrepancy is not actually due to hardware limitations, but rather to the way PS5 handles backward compatibility. There is no next-gen native version of Mass Effect Legendary Edition, and backwards compatibility allows it to be played on next-gen consoles; the Xbox Series X supports 120 fps for non-native games, while the PS5 supports 60 fps for backwards compatible titles is fixed at 60 fps.

This is an issue that has been raised in the past by developers of games such as "Rocket League," and it is unfortunate that Sony has yet to take steps to resolve this issue. As it stands, if you want the absolute best console performance when enjoying "Mass Effect Legendary Edition," we recommend playing it on the Xbox Series X.

This week's interesting news for "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" wasn't the only technical breakdown; BioWare has also announced that the game will be available as part of the Deluxe Editions of "Mass Effect 2" and "Mass Effect 3" only until now. The company sold several pieces of content that were previously only available as part of the deluxe editions of Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 for download.

This bonus digital content includes 88 tracks of music from the trilogy, two digital art books, two digital comics, and lithographs. All of this is available for free download from BioWare's website. In addition, BioWare has launched a Box Art Creator web app that allows users to place their favorite Mass Effect friends on custom covers for printing.
