Xiaomi's breakthrough charging phone in 8 minutes to 100% — here's how

Many people charge their cell phones overnight, but it is always better to be able to fill up in less than 10 minutes when needed That's what Chinese cell phone maker Xiaomi is working on

If the 67W charging speed of the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is not enough, the company claims to have broken the world record for smartphone charging speed In a Twitter video posted on the company's official profile, Xiaomi's prototype fully charged in about 7 minutes and 6 seconds with a 200W wired connection; with a 120W wireless connection, it took about 15 minutes to charge to 100%

These impressive numbers were achieved in several unique ways, as detailed by Weibo user Fei Wei (via Engadget Chinese), who was briefed on the experiment

The phone itself, a modified Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro, used a 4,000 mAh graphene battery However, graphene is considered to be the next frontier in mobile device battery development because of its faster safe charge rate and lighter weight than the lithium-ion batteries currently in use

Xiaomi's special charger also uses new technology The wired charger uses gallium nitride components instead of the more common silicon to safely generate 200W of power in a compact form factor The wireless charger, on the other hand, used an unspecified dual-coil design that differs from the single-coil wireless chargers that are common today

Xiaomi's impressive achievement puts current fast charging standards to shame It has nearly doubled the performance of current leaders in fast charging, such as the OnePlus 9 Pro's 65W wired charging and 50W wireless charging capabilities, let alone other popular phone standards

The iPhone 12 is capable of up to 20W wired charging and 18W wireless charging (via MagSafe charger only), while the Samsung Galaxy S21 is only capable of 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging

This is just an experiment for now Xiaomi has not mentioned when these amazing chargers will be available for use in phones sold, but with any luck we might be able to predict that it will be in a year or two Remember, however, that these record speeds were achieved with the technology available today, and that such charging speeds will be within reach of the average user in the near future
