Apple teases HomeOS - is the new smart home platform on the way?

Just a few days before WWDC 2021, Apple's job posting mentioned the possibility of a new operating system, homeOS. If true, it could mean new ways to interact with smart home devices through Apple's HomeKit platform.

The job posting, which has since been changed, was spotted by Javier Lacort, who posted a screenshot of it on Twitter. In it, the term "homeOS" is mentioned twice.

The original post stated, "Working with system engineers across Apple, learning the inner workings of iOS, watchOS, tvOS, and homeOS, I can optimize performance in ways only Apple can."

"The Apple Music Frameworks team owns the technology stack that enables a system-integrated Apple Music experience across all our mobile platforms: iOS, watchOS, and homeOS."

Subsequently, the first homeOS was replaced by "HomePod" and the second by "tvOS." [In recent years, Apple released a $99 HomePod Mini, while the $249 HomePod was discontinued. And while HomeKit has seen incremental improvements, it has not progressed as rapidly as Amazon Alexa or Google Home. [One Bloomberg report suggests that Apple may be working on a device that combines HomePod and AppleTV with a camera for video calls.

Given Apple's recent release of the all-new Apple TV 4K (with a much better remote control), it is also possible that the company is developing a smart display like the Amazon Echo Show or Google Nest Hub Max. A new OS would make sense here as well, since the use case is different from Apple TV.

Given that WWDC takes place on Monday, June 7, more will be revealed in the near future; here's how to watch the WWDC 2021 keynote.
