Battlefield 6 may be called "2042" — and the online beta may come soon

"Battlefield 6" is scheduled to be officially announced later this week, but ahead of its unveiling, a purported insider has already obtained more information.

The new information comes from a Reddit post discovered by VGC, which states that the game's official name is "Battlefield 2042" and that the open beta will take place at the end of this month. If this is true, it would allow people to experience the game in beta months before its expected release at the end of 2021.

The subtitle "2042" is likely a reference to the game's setting, consistent with previous leaks suggesting that Battlefield 6 will be set in the near future. It was previously said that the sixth mainline entry in the series would be called "Battlefield". However, that plan may have changed, and developer Dice may have opted to add a subtitle to avoid confusion caused by the name.

The post also states that there will be a maximum of 128 combatants per match, the return of map-based destruction features such as Revolution, Tornado, and Dynamic Weather, as well as the "largest map in Battlefield history."

Reeker also suggests that there will be a focus on teamwork. This is primarily seen in the new "Professionals" mechanism, which will give squads of four unique specialist characters with additional gadgets and abilities. Protecting the specialists in one's squad is supposed to be the key to victory.

A map set in Antarctica called Shelf was also mentioned in the leak, and the entire map is said to be much larger than previous "Battlefield" maps. Each map will be divided into sectors, which are said to be comparable to the size of the entire "Battlefield 3" map. However, this mechanic is not a feature of the game as a whole, but is believed to be related to a specific game mode.

Other tidbits in the Reddit post include new features such as wingsuits, grapple hooks, and deployable zip lines. Curiously, however, the leaker noted that "no one is a fan" of the grapple hook, a feature that may be removed after actual playtesting.

All of this information comes from unverified sources and should be viewed as nothing more than rumors at this point. While many of the details provided seem fairly plausible, we will not know if the leak is valid, at least until June 9, when publisher EA officially unveils Battlefield 6.

If you can't wait that long, a public trailer for the game has leaked online and can already be seen.

It has been officially confirmed that "Battlefield 6" is a cross-generational game that will be playable on PS5/Xbox Series X as well as PS4/Xbox One.

If you can't wait until this Wednesday for your Battlefield fix, Amazon Prime members can currently download Battlefield 4 for free, a great way to pass the time until Battlefield 6 is finally released. Also, check out our guide to features we'd love to see in the next Battlefield installment.
