Buying a PS5 is incredibly hard, and it is exciting to see retailers actually have the console in stock. In Walmart's case, however, the PS5 should not be restocked.

Walmart's PS5 page currently lists the console at an astronomical $1,091, more than double the official retail price; the PS5 Digital Edition is not much better, currently listed at $899, also more than double the MSRP.

In both cases, the console is not listed by Walmart itself. Instead, it is being listed by a third-party seller. Third-party sellers have been able to list items on Wal-Mart's website for quite some time. These listings have terrible price tags because the seller can set the price.

This is not the first time that third parties have sold items for more than they are worth, and it is happening everywhere there are third party sellers. However, Walmart itself does not have the PS5 in stock and sells it for the standard price of $500, which is why such an overpriced console is on display at the front of the line.

And this is not the first time this has happened; one would think that retailers would crack down on this, given the problems people are having in getting a PS5 at a fair price. But apparently that is not the case at Walmart.

It goes without saying that no matter how much you want a PS5, you should not pay such an exorbitant price. According to the law of supply and demand, these sellers are only asking so much because they know someone will pay it.

Clearly, inventory shortages are contributing to this cycle: there is still incredible demand for the PS5, and Sony is having problems increasing production to meet it due to the ongoing global chip shortage. As a result, restocking of the PS5 is very sporadic, and each restocking sells out almost immediately.

If you can afford $1,000 for a PS5, I suggest you save your money and hold out. You can buy two PS5s for that price. Be sure to keep checking our PS5 restocking page as well. That way you will always know when they will be restocked at the right price.
