Summer Gamefest 2021 Recap: Elden Ring, Overwatch 2, Far Cry 6 and more

Summer Game Fest is not a huge event like the traditional E3. However, with no traditional E3 taking place this year, Summer Game Fest 2021 was a great way to get a taste of what's to come in the world of gaming. While there will still be some big announcements once this year's E3, which is all about digital, begins, the Summer Game Fest was a great opportunity to hear about some pretty There were some big news announcements about games such as: Director's Cut. But the biggest news announced at the show was a full gameplay trailer and release date for the highly anticipated "Elden Ring" by Eitaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin.

Summer Game Fest aired on June 10 at 2:00 PM ET for a little over an hour and a half. If you have time, you can watch the replay here:

More than 40 other games were featured on the live stream, including some that had just been announced, some that had already been released, and some that we simply hadn't heard about in a while. It would take too long to go into detail about all the titles, but here are some highlights from the show and a few brief notes about the others we saw:

Let's start with the big news. We finally got a gameplay trailer and release date for "The Elden Ring," a dark action/RPG from the creators of Dark Souls and Game of Thrones. We first saw a teaser trailer for this game at E3 2019, but have heard nothing since. Some players (including the author) assumed that Namco Bandai had quietly cancelled this title. However, development is well underway, and the game is scheduled to be released on January 21, 2022. Here's the full trailer:

No new gameplay was seen today for Blizzard's upcoming hero shooter Overwatch 2. However, we did get to see some new character skins, including costumes for Baptiste and Sombra. The development team took the time to show off enhanced shaders and more detailed clothing designs. The team also hinted that they are working on balancing the characters to fit the new 5-on-5 match format. Expect more news about this game.

One of the best moments of the Summer Game Fest was how little was introduced about the game in question. To discuss Far Cry 6, host Jeff Keely had an unscripted conversation with popular actor Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Anton, the game's villain. Esposito said he drew inspiration from dictators throughout history, from Fidel Castro to Adolf Hitler. (He was also pleased to have the opportunity to use his political science education.) Anton himself, despite being a ruthless killer, wants to be a hero to his people - a point he shares with real-world historical figures.

The next installment in Bandai Namco's long-running Japanese RPG "Tales" series will be released on September 10, and a new trailer unveiled at Summer Game Fest revealed about two new party members and gave us a glimpse of some of the villains we will be facing along the way The trailer also shows off some of the new party members and gives a glimpse of some of the villains we will face along the way. As with previous installments in the "Tales" series, "Arise" looks to offer colorful characters, a real-time battle system, and a vast and varied world. Tales" is one of those series that has continued happily for more than 20 years without major changes to its formula, which is no doubt why fans love it so much.

The first game to get a trailer at Summer Game Fest was Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, a high-fantasy Borderlands spin-off; the offbeat DLC for Borderlands 2, Tiny Tina's Based on "Assault on Dragon Keep," the game features Andy Samberg, Wanda Sykes, Will Arnett, and Ashley Burch, who can customize their fantastical spell-casting characters. While not an official "Borderlands" production, if you like this style of humor, it might be interesting to see it in a completely different genre.
