Samsung announces one UI for the next Galaxy watch — features, watchfaces and apps

Samsung's Galaxy Watch 4, or Samsung's next smartwatch, will feature a new user interface that leverages both the company's existing product ecosystem and its recent collaboration with Google.

Google announced in May that the next Galaxy Watch will feature a unified version of Wear OS and Tizen. Samsung teased an initiative called the One UI Watch experience in a keynote at the 2021 Mobile World Congress (MWC).

Along with the integrated Wear OS software, One UI Watch should bring significant changes to the Galaxy Watch interface. It will display and update differently than Samsung's Galaxy Watch 3, Samsung's Galaxy Watch Active 2, and other early Tizen-powered Galaxy Watch models.

One of the major upgrades is a major step toward seamless handoff from smartphone to smartwatch. Soon, when you download a new app from the Google Play store to your Samsung smartphone, it will automatically appear on your new watch.

Samsung also said it is working with third-party developers to ensure compatible smartwatch versions of popular apps are available; the selection of Wear OS apps is subpar compared to watchOS, and Tizen was even worse. Therefore, it is encouraging to know that Samsung is actively addressing any initial concerns we may have with the upcoming unified platform.

Samsung also announced during MWC that it has created a new watch face design tool that will allow Android developers to use a special editing suite to create watch face themes, align text, curate fonts, add animations, etc. animations, etc.

In addition to improvements to the app and watch face, One UI Watch introduces mirroring tools that were previously unavailable. For example, blocking a number on the watch will add it to the blocked number list on your phone. Similarly, if you add an international watch to your smartphone, it will appear on your Galaxy Watch.

More of these enhancements are likely to be realized when the next Galaxy Watch debuts. Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy Watch, possibly the Galaxy Watch 4 or possibly the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 4 (or both) will be announced at an Unpacked event "later this summer."
