Nintendo Switch Pro Rumors Heat Up with Nvidia's Next Lovelace GPU

The recently announced OLED model change for the Nintendo Switch is definitely not the 4K-capable Switch Pro model that has been rumored for some time, but a more powerful gaming console could still be in the works, according to reports. Newly leaked information points to a processor that could be included in a future upgraded Switch.

According to leaker greymon55 (via NotebookCheck), who appears to be familiar with the GPU supply chain, Nvidia's rumored Lovelace architecture will be featured in the company's upcoming gaming graphics chip. lovelace is reportedly based on TSMC's 5nm manufacturing process, but according to Leeker, it is unclear whether it will be built on the standard N5 process or the enhanced N5P process.

The Lovelace architecture is expected to be featured in Nvidia's next-generation RTX 4000 GPU, but that is not all. Now, a new video on YouTube channel Moore's Law is Dead suggests that the Lovelace architecture could be scaled down to power new Switch consoles and self-driving cars through Nvidia's Orin system-on-chip

The Lovelace architecture was first introduced earlier this year.

Earlier this year, prominent Nvidia leaker kopite7kimi suggested that the Switch Pro would use Nvidia's Lovelace technology, and this latest rumor gives credence to the idea that a more powerful Switch console with Nvidia's technology may be on the way.

The current Switch and Switch Lite, as well as the upcoming Switch OLED, all feature Nvidia's Tegra X1 chip, which offers modest graphics power for Nintendo's convertible gaming console. While we do not expect the upgraded Switch to rival a powerful PC for graphics performance, even a scaled-down Lovelace chip would be a significant upgrade over the original Switch.

It is currently unclear how powerful the rumored Lovelace-powered chip would be if configured for the Switch Pro console. Previous rumors have suggested that the handheld, should it actually appear, would output 4K resolution on a compatible display, a significant visual upgrade over the current Switch model, but other specific details are thin on the ground.

Nvidia's Lovelace-powered chip is expected to roll out in 2022, and with Nintendo sticking to a lightly updated Switch OLED launch this fall, the possibility of a Switch Pro rollout in late 2022 It remains to be seen.

Nintendo has officially stated that they have no plans to launch any other models at this time, but that could change after the launch of the Switch OLED. Our Nintendo Switch Pro hub has all the latest leaks, rumors, and reports on the still hypothetical console.
