Wayward Realms wants to be an Elder Scrolls, but is even more ambitious

If you've played The Elder Scrolls, you may already be familiar with The Wayward Realms, a project that brings together the two original Elder Scrolls creators to recreate all the strengths of the Elder Scrolls, with an added emphasis on storytelling and role-playing. Elder Scrolls, while placing more emphasis on storytelling and role-playing.

With the recently released teaser trailer and Steam listing, we have more information about The Wayward Realms than ever before. If the game delivers on everything it advertises, it should be worth a look for fans of "The Elder Scrolls" as well as those who enjoy PC-style RPGs.

The Wayward Realms has been in development for over a year now, but we have learned an awful lot about this game in the past few days. First and foremost, there is the teaser trailer, which can be seen on YouTube and below:

It is exactly what you would expect from a fantasy RPG trailer. Spooky forests, adventurers on horseback, glowing lights, and a big reveal at a mountain lookout, with a castle in the far distance. There appear to be three moons in the world of "Wayward Realms," which is an interesting touch. It is also a chance to hear some of the game's music by Eric Heberling, who composed the music for The Elder Scrolls: Arena and The Elder Scrolls: 7]

.

Indeed, if you like "Arena" and "Daggerfall," "The Wayward Realms" may appeal more to you than "Morrowind," "Oblivion," or "Skyrim. That's because Ted Peterson and Julian LeFay, who worked on the first two "Elder Scrolls" games, have teamed up again to create "The Wayward Realms. The "go anywhere, do anything" atmosphere of the early "Elder Scrolls" films seems to be alive and well in this new project:

"[Developer] Once Lost Games is creating a new open world fantasy RPG. There, choices, consequences, scope, and role-playing are experienced like never before in a new class of game, a grand RPG, in a realistic scaled open world," the game's Steam page explains. The Wayward Realms is set on more than 100 realistically scaled islands, collectively known as the Archipelago, where many factions vie for influence and power."

What sets The Wayward Realms apart from The Elder Scrolls and similar games is its game master mechanic: The Wayward Realms has a "virtual game master" who controls the experience, much like a real game master does in a tabletop RPG. According to the Steam listing, this game master "makes things interesting by making other characters and their factions react or plot their next move based on your actions." The details are a bit vague at the moment, but whatever persona you create for yourself - thief, nobleman, scholar, etc. - will affect how other characters view you and how the story unfolds.

The Wayward Realms finally has a Steam page, but no release date has been scheduled yet. The game seems large and ambitious, especially since Once Lost Games is made up of a small development team. Still, Elder Scrolls fans will be able to keep an eye on the game - especially since, all else being equal, it could be released before The Elder Scrolls VI.
