Apple Watch 7's biggest Upgrade Tipped by New Report

The Apple Watch 7 is sure to get an upgrade, and a new report details several major features that could be coming to the rumored device. They range from a flatter design and updated processor to a new "Time to Run" mode.

It should be emphasized that this information is not definitive at this stage, but was published in Mark Garman's weekly newsletter, Power On. the Apple Watch Series 7, the iPhone 13 series, AirPods 3, iPad mini 6, and possibly the MacBook Pro 2021, along with several other models, are among the devices Apple is expected to unveil at the event.

Gurman, writing for Bloomberg, expects the Apple Watch 7 to be "slightly redesigned," which will include updated screen technology, a flatter display, and a faster processor.

We have already heard rumors about the new design, with previous renderings showing a new flat-edged body and possibly even smaller bezels; Gurman himself reported that Apple is testing "new lamination technology " and is reportedly testing it, noting that Watch 7 may be "slightly thicker" than previous models, though not noticeably so. This may account for the flatter display.

Being an upgraded Apple Watch, there was always the possibility of a faster processor. It could also be a necessary upgrade, as the Apple Watch 7's new health tracking features are rumored to include blood glucose monitoring and swim tracking.

As for the "Time to Run" feature, Gurman reports that this is very similar to the existing "Time to Walk" mode available to Apple Fitness Plus subscribers. This feature features celebrities such as Dolly Parton and Shawn Mendes saying something while walking. Presumably the running version will follow the same format, but will be designed to maintain a faster pace.

Obviously, these new features are far from definitive, but Garman has a very good track record with Apple's information.

In addition to detailing what to expect from the Watch 7, Garman also discusses several other new Apple products. iPhone 13, while maintaining a similar design to the iPhone 12, will feature a 120Hz ProMotion display, faster A15 chip, and new camera features such as Cinematic Video (better described as a portrait mode for video), while keeping the same design as the iPhone 12.

On the audio front, Gurman said that the AirPods 3 will be a new entry-level version of Apple's earphones, with a design similar to the more advanced AirPods Pro, including a new in-ear design and shorter stem. The new iPad Mini 6 is also mentioned and is said to come in a new design that includes thinner edges.

Finally, Gurman notes the continuing delays of the MacBook Pro 14-inch 2021 and MacBook Pro 16-inch 2021, but claims that the new models will be ready for the "second anniversary" of the current 16-inch MacBook Pro. This would mean a November 2019 launch and hopefully a new model before then.

No date has yet been set for the iPhone 13 launch event, but Apple typically holds launch events around mid-September.
