PS5 Update reportedly surprises performance in some games

Last week, the second PS5 system update was released worldwide. The main features include more internal storage, UI tweaks, and an improved trophy system, but it turns out that Sony may have been hiding some important additions.

After rigorous testing, Digital Foundry found that the new PS5 system update actually improves performance in some games. After installing the update, console testing experts found that games including Devil May Cry 5 and Control ran about 2-3% faster on the new console firmware.

Richard Leadbetter of Digital Foundry explained that "in a very few scenarios, the PlayStation 5 appears to be running faster on this new firmware than before."

This performance increase leads to a slight frame rate increase of about 2 fps in some games. Of course, a frame rate increase of this magnitude is so small that the average player will probably not be able to detect the difference, but it is nonetheless very interesting that Sony has managed to improve the performance level of the PS5 with only a system update.

Although this specific performance increase is on the small side, it may indicate that further performance gains will be realized in future system updates.

If Sony can refine the PS5's gaming behavior with just a system update, console manufacturers may be less inclined to release the PS5 Pro right away. However, there will be limits to what can be accomplished by simply updating existing game consoles with new firmware.

In the future, Sony hopes to release a super-upgraded version of the PS5 with upgraded internals. There are already rumors circulating suggesting that a PS5 capable of running games at 8K is in the pipeline for 2023, but it is highly unlikely that that level of performance enhancement will be patched into existing PS5 models.

Overall, the latest system update really takes the PS5 to the next level. The playing experience on the console is better than ever. Additionally, with the recent release of excellent exclusives like "Deathloop" and "Kena: Bridge of Spirits," now is a great time to look for a PS5 restock.
