Sony tests the PS5 game trial feature - here's how it works

A year into the PS5's lifecycle, even the most hardcore Sony fans may have forgotten about Game Trials. After all, the feature was first introduced to PS Plus subscribers in 2010. Now that trial is coming to PS5.

As reported by Eurogamer, the site noticed that two PS5 games have been uploaded to the PlayStation Store as trial versions. Unlike a similar trial feature first introduced on the PS3, Sony chose to start the trial timer the moment the user downloaded the game. Sony chose to start the trial timer at the moment the user downloads the game. [For example, the trial for Death Stranding: Director's Cut is 6 hours long and 68 GB. If the game takes 3 hours to download, gamers would have 3 hours of play time left. Users with slow Internet connections may not even have a chance to play at all before reaching the title screen. Incidentally, the trial playing time for "Sackboy: A Big Adventure" is slightly shorter: five hours.

However, there is a possible workaround discovered by users. According to a Reddit post by user jsnals, gamers can work around this by creating a new account within the same region as their main account. After selecting "Download Trial" on the newly created account, return to the main account and select "Download Trial" again. This will reset the timer and allow the user to play the game for the full 6 hours allotted.

Given the state of the trial feature, Sony may have limited it to one region to eliminate the glitch. Perhaps there is a back-end issue that needs to be resolved, as evidenced by the workaround above. Once fixed, if it is an oversight, Sony may make it available in other regions.

Tom's Guide has asked Sony for further clarification. We will update this article as soon as we receive a response.
