PS5 system update seems to get back a very annoying bug

A previously fixed PS5 disc installation problem appears to have resurfaced after the console's latest system update.

The PS5 recently received a minor system update to improve stability, but it appears that an earlier fix for one of the console's most annoying problems has been rolled back. Reports of the recurrence of this problem came from several users on Reddit and were initially discovered by VGC.

The problem is that the console will attempt to install the PS4 version of the game without prompting when the game disc is inserted, even if the upgrade option to PS5 is selected. The issue was widely reported at the console's launch in November, but Sony appears to have fixed it earlier this year.

The patch notes for the February PS5 system update stated: "In rare cases, after upgrading to and installing the PS5 version, the PS4 version of the game would install from the disc. Now, inserting a PS4 game disc will not cause the PS4 version to be installed unexpectedly."

It is stated that.

However, in recent weeks, reports of this bug recurring have been found in subreddits for games such as "Death Stranding" and "No Man's Sky," which have both PS4 and PS5 native ports. The bug does not prevent users from accessing the PS5 version, but it does result in two versions of the same game being installed on the console's limited 825 GB hard disk.

Deleting the PS4 version of the game does not solve the problem, and the next time the disc is inserted, the console will start the installation process all over again. One user reported that he had to delete the unwanted PS4 version of Death Stranding three times because the PS5 would not stop installing the PS4 version of the game on its own.

Sony has already fixed this problem once, so hopefully it won't take too long to fix it a second time. However, it is frustrating to be reminded that just because a patch has been applied does not mean that the problem will not recur at a later date. Hopefully Sony will quietly reintroduce the fix in the next PS5 system update.
