Battlefield 2042 Gameplay trailer tries to sell fans with controversial specialist system

A gameplay trailer for "Battlefield 2042" has been released. This nearly three-minute gameplay video focuses on introducing the five specialists that will appear in the game at launch. It is one of the longest trailers to showcase gameplay, but it is already proving to be controversial.

For those who may not know, Specialists replace the traditional class system in Battlefield 2042. Each character named Specialist has unique abilities and equipment, but chooses from the same weapon types, a feature similar to Overwatch's Hero or Apex Legends' Legend. You will no longer select a customizable Medic or Assault class, and will play as a fixed specialist such as Boris or Dozer at the start of a match.

This change has been quite controversial among longtime Battlefield players. Some hardcore fans argue that the specialists will have a negative impact on teamwork because they will encourage players to play as lone wolves instead of working together to achieve objectives. However, the new trailer aims to convince fans by highlighting the five specialists that make up the game's final 10-man roster.

The new specialists introduced are Sundance, the only specialist who can use a wingsuit, and Ji Su Pake, who automatically highlights enemies who damage her. Both seem extremely useful.

Angel's ability to drop supply crates that allow him and his squadmates to trade loadouts on the fly seems rather trivial. One would expect some specialists to be favored over others.

Earlier this month, the open beta for Battlefield 2042 took place, giving players their first taste of the war in 2042. The resulting specialist system was unpopular with some players and caused no small amount of backlash. However, in a new official blog post, developer Dice further reinforced its approach.

The post, titled "What We Learned from the Open Beta," makes it clear that Specialist is here to stay. It states, "We believe Specialists are the next evolution of the classic Battlefield class system and will not only allow individual players to have a greater impact, but also elevate cooperative teams to new heights."

Unfortunately, it seems that Battlefield fans hoping for a return of the traditional class system will have to accept that specialists are the future of the franchise, at least for now. Presumably, the included Battlefield Portal mode will mix content from previous titles in the franchise, allowing players to play as the familiar Recon, Assault, Medic, and Support classes.

"Battlefield 2042" is currently scheduled for release on November 19, but early access will be available on November 12 if you purchase the deluxe edition. The game will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. A stripped-down version will also be available for previous generation consoles.
