Update: New leaks indicate that the MacBook Air 2022 will feature a notchless display
Apple's next MacBook Air could undergo a fairly dramatic redesign, including slimmer bezels, MagSafe charging, a 1080p webcam, and color options like the iMac 2021
This is according to reliable leaker Dylandkt (via MacRumors), the MacBook Air 2022 will feature the rumored Apple M2 chip, mini LED display, no fan, 30W power adapter, off-white keyboard and screen bezel There is also a possibility that it will have an off-white keyboard and screen bezel In effect, the rumored next-generation Air could inherit some of the best features of the MacBook Pro 2021
Dylandkt noted that "the design will be similar to the new MacBook Pro, but thinner and lighter," and claimed that inside Apple the MacBook Air is simply called "MacBook" This is interesting given that Apple discontinued the previous MacBook model The previous model MacBook was a very thin laptop that traded performance for battery life
Regardless of the name, however, this MacBook is likely to be the next-generation MacBook Air, and Dylandkt's claims in particular are consistent with many of the previous rumors
For example, the M2 chip has been said for several months to be in the MacBook Air 2022 The M1 Pro and M1 Max chips in the new MacBook Pro are expected to prioritize efficiency and battery life over raw performance; see here for a comparison of the M1 Pro and M1 Max
Dylandkt also reinforced rumors that the MacBook Air 2022 may feature a mini LED display This makes sense, given that Apple has included such screens in the new MacBook Pro and iPad Pro 2021 In other words, the next-generation MacBook Air will have a brighter, richer-contrast display than the current model
However, those expecting a high-resolution display and additional ports may be disappointed, as Dylandkt is confident that "there will be no ProMotion, Face ID, SD card slot, or HDMI port"
The lack of additional ports is a bit disappointing, since one of the good things about the new MacBook Pro is that Apple has brought back many useful ports that were previously ditched for USB-C The MacBook Air 2022 will support multiple external displays via USB-C HDMI is not a major issue since it is said to do so, but a full-size SD card reader would definitely be nice
Despite its possible similarity to the MacBook Pro 2021, we don't know if the next MacBook Air will have a similar notch above the display However, according to MacRumors, one of the latest leaks hints that the next MacBook Air may borrow the notch from the Pro model That's potentially good news, since it suggests that the MacBook Air 2022 will have a slimmer display bezel, one of the five things we want from the next MacBook Air
Perhaps one of the freshest redesign rumors for the next MacBook Air concerns color
According to Dylandkt, off-white, reminiscent of the original MacBook, could be an option There may also be shades inspired by the iMac 2021, which features a variety of pastel colors
As promising as these rumors are, there is a catch: it is unclear whether Apple will announce an upgraded MacBook Air in mid-2022; Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has also stated that the next MacBook Air could be announced next year, along with the rumored AirPods Pro 2 and upgraded iPad Pro models stated
