This Apple EarPods concept rethinks wired earbuds.

Apple's latest AirPods 3 are a new masterpiece in wireless earbuds, but some users want Apple to take a more low-tech approach to its new products, including 9to5Mac's Parker Ortolani and José Adorno, who are calling for Apple's wired earbuds.

Remember the EarPods? They were the default headphones that came with Apple's mobile products. This concept revives the idea by combining the shape of the AirPods 3 with the braided design of the USB-C and Lightning cables that were included with the iMac 2021, in either a traditional white finish or a new black finish. Simple, but strangely compelling.

The best wireless earbuds provide high-quality audio without cables, but this design has its limitations. [For example, wireless will always be more expensive than comparable wired designs and rely on a separate battery rather than power from the device you are listening to. The sound quality of the earphones' built-in microphones is inferior to the in-line microphones of wired earphones. Furthermore, most wireless earphones go to sleep the moment they are removed from the ear, whereas wired microphones can be positioned more easily.

Ortolani and Adorno say their concept also offers Spatial Audio, Apple's 360-degree sound standard; Spatial Audio is currently only available on AirPods 3, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. Therefore, adding a new and much less expensive compatible product would be a great move on Apple's part.

The two writers also imagine that Apple will sell these earphones not only in a Lightning connector version, but also in a 3.5mm jack connector version. by offering a 3.5mm jack, these EarPods will be compatible with iPhone, iPod, iPad, and will be able to be used with all other types of devices. And since Apple currently sells EarPods with both ends, it makes sense to do the same with the new models. A USB-C version would also be welcome, given that some MacBooks and iPads can only connect via oval ports.

There is little chance that EarPods will be bundled with other products in the future. With the iPhone 12, Apple has removed the included EarPods, and more prominently the charging brick, from the iPhone box. This is a trend that more and more companies are adopting, so even if Apple updates the EarPods, the policy will not be reversed.

Another important rumor to keep in mind when dreaming up new EarPods is that Apple is supposedly moving to portless iPhones in just a couple of generations; MagSafe charging, AirPods audio, and AirDrop data transfer are all established. Apple is well-prepared for the transition to an all-wireless iPhone. So while we would love to see Apple create a new trend for its latest wired earbuds, it seems unlikely.
