Star Wars Eclipse release date speculation, trailer, gameplay and more

Dozens of games were announced at The Game Awards 2021, but there was only one eye-popping announcement: Star Wars Eclipse.

Set in the Star Wars universe, the new game is from Quantic Dream, the studio behind "Heavy Rain," "Detroit: Heavy Rain" and "Detroit: Become Human," among others. Rumors have been circulating on the Internet for the past few months that the French developer is working on a Star Wars game, and the rumors whispered on the Internet have been proven correct.

While it's still very early days on this game, we do know a little bit about it and have already seen its breathtaking trailer. For all the latest news about Star Wars Eclipse, read on.

The game was announced with a stunning cinematic trailer showcasing the setting of the Great Republic. Not to be confused with the Old Republic, the High Republic period takes place hundreds of years before the Skywalker Saga, during the Golden Age of the Jedi Order. Although it has been depicted in novels, graphic comics, and audio dramas, Eclipse is the first video game set in this era of the Star Wars timeline.

While there is no gameplay in the trailer, there is still plenty to dissect. That's when we see a small green figure staring out the window of a room that looks like the Jedi Council.

We also see a pair of Jedi dueling on a bridge and an alien performing a ritual that gives birth to a sinister figure.

Given the quality of this release trailer, it is not surprising that Star Wars fans are already clamoring for fresh details. However, at this stage, not even a release date has been confirmed, so fans may have to wait patiently for more information.

All that has been confirmed at this stage is that the game is "currently in the early stages of development" on the Star Wars website.

This indicates that it will be at least a couple of years before we can actually get our hands on this already eagerly anticipated title. In addition, information from Tom Henderson, a reputable leaker, suggests that it will be several years before we can actually play "Star Wars Eclipse".

Henderson claims that "Star Wars Eclipse" is "likely to take at least three to four years." The team at developer Quantic Dream is currently struggling to hire staff, as their existing development tools are not suited for a game of the type "Eclipse" is. The development team is currently struggling to hire staff because they are having problems with their existing development tools not being suitable for the type of game that "Eclipse" is.

Quantic Dream is known for creating interactive, story-driven adventure games that de-emphasize traditional gameplay, but the developer may be expanding its reach for "Eclipse." The developer has stated that "Star Wars Eclipse" will be a complex, branching action-adventure game," suggesting that it may shake off the "playable movie" tag that has been (harshly) labeled on Quantic Dream's previous works.

However, the studio is not completely changing course; in typical Quantic Dream fashion, player choice appears to be a key element in Star Wars Eclipse. With multiple playable characters, "your choices are central to the experience as every decision you make has a dramatic impact on how the story unfolds." Without a doubt, "Eclipse" is going to be a game that you will want to complete over and over again to see all the combinations.

Curiously, there is no word at this stage on what platform "Star Wars Eclipse" will be released on; it is almost certain to be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, but it seems unlikely that it will be released on PS4 and Xbox One. Given that the release date is likely to be several years away, by the time it sees the light of day, those previous generation consoles will probably be obsolete.
