LG's immersive exercise bike with flexible OLED panel looks amazing

Thanks to the rapid spread of the omicron form of the Covid-19 coronavirus, the situation at CES 2022 may be fluid, but LG is eager to present more interesting concepts to the public ahead of the big trade show. (LG has stated that it is committed to attending the conference even as other companies and media withdraw.)

LG's latest announcement includes two concepts that are sure to have a big impact at CES 2022. The exercise bike and recliner chair presented at the show both demonstrate the potential of flexible OLED technology.

Virtual Ride is LG's attempt at a fitness bike, featuring three of LG's large OLED panels mounted vertically, with a particularly aggressive 500R, or 500mm radius, curve on the top panel. LG says this is the highest among large OLED displays.

Of course, being LG's OLED panels, the company touts the vibrant colors and excellent contrast.

LG does not explain why it came up with this concept, but one can assume it was to enhance the immersive experience and make you feel like you are actually driving along a lush forest trail. It would be cool to see such a setup connected to the peloton.

Also unveiled was the LG Media Display. This plush recliner is angled perfectly for LG's TV with a strong 1,500R curve. Not only that, the screen can pivot between horizontal and vertical depending on usage.

It also has built-in cinematic sound OLED (CSO) technology that vibrates the display to output sound. This allows the TV to have a clean look without the need for speakers out the bottom; the speakers inside the LG OLED C1 sound great, but fall short of a proper soundbar setup.

OLED technology is still a major part of LG's business model now that the company has introduced mini-LED technology in its QNED line of TVs.

"We will continue to deliver differentiated value to our customers through the unlimited potential of OLEDs, while at the same time integrating the business into diverse industries," Yeo Chun-ho, head of business development at LG Display, said in a press release announcing the new concept. He stated.

Mini LED TVs like the amazing Samsung QN90A Neo currently rival LG's top OLED panels in vivid contrast and color. However, mini-LED technology allows for dramatically higher levels of brightness than OLEDs and makes HDR content pop. Unfortunately, because of their weight, mini-LED panels are less capable of making bendable displays. Therefore, LG seems keen to differentiate OLEDs from competing technologies.
