JBL Boombox3 is a Bluetooth speaker built for outdoor party

JBL's most exciting new product is the Boombox 3, which is IP67-compliant, loud, and delivers a day's worth of battery life.

As its name suggests, this is not the first entry in the series, and JBL has built on its predecessor with a new three-way speaker system consisting of two tweeters, two midrange drivers, and a "powerful racetrack-style subwoofer." The company claims that as a result of these changes, the new speakers offer deeper bass and "intense clarity"

ideal for large outdoor parties.

The design, while familiar, has also been tweaked. The handle is made of metal with an "eye-catching" orange silicone grip for comfort, and is available in two colors: an understated black and a more prominent "squad colors" design (pictured above).

Like its predecessor, it has a built-in power bank that can be used for 24 hours on a single charge and charges the device without interrupting the music. It can also be paired with other JBL PartyBoost compatible speakers for louder volume and stereo sound.

We did not test the JBL Boombox 2, but our sister site TechRadar did, praising its loud, distortion-free sound in a four-star review. The review concludes, "It's fine indoors, but really shines when playing music outdoors with a small group."

Indeed, aside from complaints about the lack of a Bluetooth codec, the biggest drawback our colleagues could find was its high MSRP; JBL has apparently raised the price of the Boombox 3 by $50, to $499. We'll have to see if this product justifies its cost and makes the list of best Bluetooth speakers when it goes on sale at "select retailers" this summer.
