Ces2022: HyperX's New Wireless Gaming Headset Runs for 300 Hours

HyperX is no stranger to the gaming headset field, having produced some of the best gaming headsets over the past decade or so.

Now the company has cut the cord on the well-established HyperX Cloud Alpha with the introduction of the HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless. But what really stands out about the Cloud Alpha Wireless is not its design, but its battery life of up to 300 hours.

At CES 2022, HyperX announced this year's hardware lineup, and the Cloud Alpha Wireless is at the top of the list. [The company detailed the Cloud Alpha Wireless' features, which include DTS Headphone X surround sound, 50mm drivers, a lightweight design, interchangeable ear cups, and a noise-canceling microphone. Some of these features are significant upgrades from the wired version of the Cloud Alpha, while others remain largely unchanged from those already present in the wired version.

However, battery life seems to be the standout feature of the Cloud Alpha Wireless, with HyperX claiming that the headset "offers the longest-lasting battery in a wireless gaming headset" based on a December 2021 analysis. For reference, Tom's Guide has not tested a gaming headset that lasts nearly 300 hours. Peripherals in this category tend to start around 15 hours and go up to 50 hours.

HyperX does not explain how exactly the Cloud Alpha Wireless can provide this level of charge, but "an incredibly heavy battery" does not seem to be the answer. The device weighs 11.8 ounces, not unlike wireless gaming headsets currently on the market.

The Cloud Alpha Wireless will be available in February for $200, and Tom's Guide will publish a full review of the device shortly after its release. However, HyperX notes that the February date is not an absolute guarantee due to the current global public health and shipping crisis.

In addition, HyperX has several other devices planned for the first half of 2022: the HyperX Clutch Wireless Gaming Controller ($50, March), the HyperX Pulsefire Haste Wireless Gaming Mouse ($80, February), HyperX Alloy Origins 65 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard ($100, February), HyperX Cloud II Gaming Headset ($100, March), HyperX Cloud Core Gaming Headset ($70, January). Some of these products are refreshed versions; some are entirely new.

One interesting note is that HP's acquisition of HyperX in June 2021 allows the two companies to combine their PC gaming expertise: HP has made excellent desktops and laptops, while HyperX excels in peripherals.

Cloud Alpha

The Cloud Alpha Wireless could be a big leap forward for gaming headsets, if the claimed 300-hour battery life isn't a ton of hype. We'll know for sure next month.
