Sync will grow into a smart home with a new nest thermostat rival- and many more

Cync, formerly known as C by GE and now a brand owned by Savant, is making a big move into the smart home category with a new smart thermostat, home security cameras, and nearly a dozen smart lights. This is a significant expansion from its previous offerings, which were limited to a few light bulbs and plugs.

Equally important, all of these products are relatively affordable, with the most expensive costing $129. Below is a brief summary of all the products announced by Cync, along with their release dates.

While not as cheap as the $59 Amazon Smart Thermostat or the $99 Google Nest Thermostat, the $129 Cync Smart Thermostat is price competitive. More importantly, it can be installed without a C-wire (common wire), which should make it easier for more homeowners to install it themselves. It also works with Alexa and Google Assistant.

The Cync Smart Thermostat can also work with remote temperature sensors ($29 each, sold separately), which can be instructed to keep the heat on until the back rooms of the house are warm. However, unlike the remote sensor that works with the Ecobee SmartThermostat, Cync's sensor can only detect temperature, not the presence of people. [The Cync Smart Thermostat is currently available at Lowe's, Best Buy, and Amazon.

The Cync Outdoor Smart Camera has an important feature that many good outdoor security cameras do not have. That is, if you want to store the camera's video, you don't have to rely on an Internet connection. However, if you want to store video in the cloud and take advantage of features such as motion, sound, and person detection, you will need to sign up for a $30 annual Cam Sync subscription.

The Cync Outdoor Smart Camera is available in both wired and battery/solar powered versions. It has a resolution of 2K/1280P and does not have a built-in spotlight or floodlight, but does have night vision capabilities. The camera will be available in February for $99 for the wired model and $129 for the battery-powered version. Sync has announced 11 new smart lights, including a general-purpose bulb, a decorative filament (aka Edison) bulb, a candelabra bulb, and a globe bulb, as well as two types of recessed lighting. They are available in both white and color. The bulbs will be available in March, with prices starting at $11.99.
