After shutting down some Mario content and sparking a storm of "Mario is dead" memes on the Internet, Nintendo is turning the spotlight on another of its iconic characters: Pac-Man. The yellow blob is capitalizing on the battle royale craze with the newly announced Pac-Man 99.

Exclusively for Nintendo Switch Online players, members of the service can download the new game today at 6 a.m. PT/9 a.m. BST/2 p.m. BST. If you've played Tetris 99 or Mario 35 (before support was discontinued on March 31), you'll be familiar with this concept.

The basics of the game are the same as before, with Pac-Man scavenging for power pellets and chasing and devouring ghosts.

Ghosts are sent to attack other players as Jammer Pacman.

If you want to win, you must go on the offensive and chomp down on the sleeping ghosts to form a ghost train. Once the train is stacked, gobble up the pellets, chase it with a thick line of ghosts, and flood your opponents with Jammer Pac-Man.

In addition to the basic gameplay, there are four power-ups to take advantage of: the Stronger, Speed, Standard, and Train. Add in the four targeting options of Knockout, Hunter, Counter, and Random, and you have eight preset strategies to beat your competition and be the last Pac-Man standing.

If you want to change things up, there are paid Namco DLC packs for offline modes and alternate themes. You can get it all in the "Pac-Man Deluxe" pack, priced at $29.99. You can also get the DLC elements individually for $1.99, and the offline mode is $14.99.
