"Doom 3" is one of the most controversial films in the series. Some fans cannot stand its grim atmosphere and bleak visuals. However, some fans argue that those elements make it one of the most intense experiences in the Doom series. Either way, the game has the potential to become more immersive and scarier; Doom 3: VR Edition will be available for PlayStation VR later this month.

The information comes from the official PlayStation Blog, which includes a trailer for Doom 3: VR Edition and information on how the game will work on the PSVR headset. At the same time, Sony also announced five other PSVR games, but Doom 3 definitely seems to be the standout title.

The trailer showcases most of what to expect from the Doom 3 port. You take control of a space marine as he explores a facility overrun with demons. Various guns, chainsaws, and most importantly, a flashlight to illuminate the dimly lit corridors and the terrifying monsters that lurk within.

As for the gameplay, it appears to be similar to the original Doom 3, but this time you control a pair of disembodied hands. This is a common graphical trick in VR games and makes picking up objects and interacting with the environment a little less uncomfortable. Sony also touts "VR enhancements" such as peeking around corners, lining up gunshots with motion controls, and a quick turn feature. (This may cause motion sickness, but would be necessary for first-person shooters.)

"Doom 3: VR Edition" also includes the expanded content "Resurrection of Evil" and "The Lost Mission," so "Doom" fans need not worry about missing out on content from the original game. Also, Sony touts "new textures, shaders, and sound effects," but the PC version still has higher resolution.

The game will be available on March 29, but Sony has yet to announce a price. In any case, we will find out within the next few weeks.

If Doom 3: VR Edition doesn't scratch your PSVR itch, there are five other titles that Sony highlighted today: after the Fall is a cooperative FPS, Zenith is an MMO inspired by Japanese RPGs, I Expect you to Die 2: The Spy and the Liar is a tense puzzle game, Fracked is a stylish action/platformer, and Song in the Smoke is a wilderness survival game.

FPS games in VR can be a difficult proposition. Nevertheless, "Doom" has experimented with VR before with its spin-off "Doom VFR," which was well received. It remains to be seen if this method will work for the main game.
