Call of Duty now looks even better on PS5 and Xbox Series X — here's why

Activision has released a new high-resolution texture pack for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and the free-to-play battle royale spin-off Warzone. [The pack is available for PS5, PS4 Pro, and the Xbox Series X. Weighing in at about 8GB, this upgrade promises to give first-person shooters a visual jolt.

"This pack supports the most detailed weapon and operator textures for Modern Warfare and Warzone," the PSN Store listing reads.

It is also "recommended for PS4 Pro and PS5 players with high-resolution displays only." This means that if you are playing on a base PS4 or do not have your console connected to a 4K display, you can forgo this optional pack, but the latter category is likely to be quite small.

Unfortunately, for PlayStation players, this patch is purely a texture resolution improvement and will not bring the 120 frames per second upgrade that fans have been asking for; the Xbox Series X version already supports 120 fps, and the Xbox 3.0 version will be able to support 120 frames per second.

It is curious that Activision would upgrade "Modern Warfare" for 2019, even though last year's "Black Ops Cold War" is the latest installment in the popular shooter series. Usually, when a new "Call of Duty" game is released, the previous year's game is considered complete and put out to pasture.

Of course, the two games are almost intertwined, as the still-supported Warzone spinoff uses Modern Warfare's launcher and shares the same core mechanics. The developers could have upgraded both at the same time rather than doing additional work to upgrade Modern Warfare itself.

However, Activision has already confirmed that in the next playing season, Warzone will transition from the original Verdansk map to a new area that works with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, so the two will pair will not be for much longer.

This texture pack will likely be the last real update for the rebooted "Modern Warfare. At least this is an option.
