Samsung's stunning new 8K TV may not have a bezel at all

Samsung may be known for The Frame TV, which hangs on the wall like art and has a decorative frame around the screen, but Samsung's other premium TV lineup may eliminate bezels altogether for 2020.

A few days before CES, leaked images of Samsung's new 8K QLED TVs were spotted by German tech site 4Kfilme. The images show Samsung's TV with the L-shaped pedestal used on previous QLED models, but the TV has a distinctly new look, as there are no black bars around the display.

The lack of bezel is a severe change from past models and other LCD TVs, replicating a trick that was offered in some of Samsung's Galaxy phones and LG's OLED TVs. However, this is a major improvement for LCD TVs and represents a new level of sophistication for the technology, along with Samsung's quantum dot enhancement and local dimming, two innovations that have dramatically improved the picture quality of most TVs on the market.

While not truly bezel-less (the bottom bezel is clearly visible in the photo, and perhaps a slim border around the top and sides of the screen), its proportions should make it difficult to even notice the bezel from a comfortable viewing distance. The result should be something close to the Platonic ideal of TV design: when you watch TV, all you see is the display panel.

Additional reports by 4Kfilme and Samsung-focused news site Sammobile suggest that this new feature could be called "Zero Bezel" or "Infinity Screen," based on a trademark filed by the company in early 2019. Reports from South Korea also suggest that manufacturing of this new premium design will begin earlier this year, in February, prior to the product launch in March.

All unconfirmed at this time, but the basis for these reports seems fairly solid, and with CES literally days away, we can expect many major TV announcements this week. Keep an eye out for the latest news from CES 2020, as there should be a lot of news to be announced from each of the major TV manufacturers.
