The more powerful Nintendo Switch will appear in 2020 (Report)

Nintendo is very happy with the Switch. So much so that they may be planning to introduce a new upgraded gaming console just months after the launch of the Switch Lite and upgraded standard Switch in 2019.

According to Taiwanese electronics industry information website Digitimes, the new Switch will be in production by the end of the first quarter of 2020 and will be introduced in mid-2020.

Digitimes often gets Apple rumors wrong, but is pretty solid on other news from the supply and manufacturing chain. With comments from the Wall Street Journal's technology reporter Takashi Mochizuki and gaming industry consultant Serkan Toto, this seems certain.

We don't know much about the new Nintendo Switch, but Digitimes says it will have faster, updated electronics; Toto predicts that the updated CPU and GPU will be able to provide 4K support while connected to a TV via the Switch's dock Toto predicts that it will be able to provide.

There is no mention of Nintendo upgrading the resolution of the device's display itself with a higher density panel to match the external pixel resolution; it is highly unlikely that the Switch's current 6.2 inches will feature a 4K display. However, one can expect a Retina-like display, which would jump from the current 1280 x 720 pixel resolution to 1080p.

The Taiwanese paper also noted that Nintendo may replace the Switch's plastic housing with a magnesium alloy housing. Magnesium alloys are both structurally stronger and thinner than plastic, which could significantly reduce both the size and weight of the system.

Toto believes the retail price will be $399, so these specs may be asking too much.

Nintendo told Polygon that it has "nothing to announce on this topic." At least not a no.
