Peloton's connected treadmill costs $4,000; streaming cardio through Peloton rival Mirror costs an additional $1,495; Huami-owned Amazfit, known for its solid line of inexpensive smartwatches known for its solid line of inexpensive smartwatches, but will combine both concepts in its new Connected HomeStudio
The price of Amazfit's HomeStudio is not yet known, but given the company's reputation for undercutting big tech companies on price, it will surely be much, much cheaper than the $5,495 you pay for both Peloton's treadmill and Mirror's workout assistant There's no doubt about it
HomeStudio combines a treadmill with a 56-inch stand-up mirror called Glass, which has a 43-inch HD LCD screen built into it that can stream your workout The treadmill itself has no display and is different from Peloton's Tread, which has a screen mounted on the front
Amazfit's treadmill can be purchased as a standalone device separate from Glass The treadmill itself has no screen, so a smartphone or tablet is attached to the sidebar of the treadmill and streams workouts from the Studio app; it's not as elegant as Peloton's solution, and Glass is not as gorgeous with a streamlined user interface like Mirror interface, and it's not gorgeous However, Amazfit's options (premium treadmills, the lower-priced Amazfit AirRun, Glass, and a combination of Glass and treadmill) are less expensive than Peloton's and Mirror's, and offer a wider range of options
Glass also has a camera lens with a 3D time-of-flight sensor that can detect form during class and provide tips on how to improve (The lens has a sliding cap to protect privacy)
Studio is a New York-based company that partnered with Amazfit to create Connected HomeStudio, but the Studio app can also be used independently; Studio has five instructors and offers 15 classes each weekday, including running, sculpting, stretching, yoga With the separate use of Glass, users can stream stretching and yoga classes
Peloton revolutionized home gym equipment with its stationary bike, and now startups are trying to compete with it with more customizable options and cheaper devices Amazfit says it will announce pricing and availability soon
