Switch Pro a no go: Nintendo says there are no plans for a new console in 2020

The Nintendo Switch is one of Nintendo's best consoles ever and one of its most popular. However, there is always room for improvement: the Switch's processing power is the lowest of the current Big Three consoles, and its internal storage capacity is not large enough, which is problematic in a gaming market that is increasingly reliant on full game downloads.

After producing a refreshed standard Switch and a portable-only Switch Lite, Nintendo was rumored to be working on the Switch Pro, which is expected to arrive sometime during 2020. It was also suggested that the Switch Pro could be a dedicated TV console, as opposed to the Switch Lite.

Now, however, Nintendo appears to have quashed these rumors. The company's new financial report (PDF) (via Kotaku) includes the following passage: "Please note that we do not plan to launch a new Nintendo Switch model during 2020."

This clarification will no doubt disappoint some Nintendo fans. However, even though there are no "plans" to release the Switch Pro this year, that doesn't mean that all of the Switch Pro rumors are untrue. It is possible that Nintendo may change its mind and release something in time for the holiday season. Or they may just be taking their time to develop the Switch Pro, which will be released in 2021.

Meanwhile, Microsoft's Xbox Series X has already been announced, and big news about the PS5 is expected any day now. While all of these consoles are touted for their cutting-edge specs and raw power, Nintendo's style is anything but. So the house that Mario built may want to wait until the smoke clears on these two launches and keep the spotlight to itself.
