Facebook will offer up to $5 for a recording of your voice to improve its voice recognition technology

Rather than undertaking to transcribe and review recordings randomly and without disclosure, which has been a problem for companies like Amazon, Google, and Apple, Facebook users can now choose to have their voices heard

The company's new points-based "Pronunciations" program allows users to earn pay-per-credit for completing recording sets through Facebook's market research app, Viewpoints

According to The Verge, those eligible to participate in Pronunciations will be asked to record the phrase "Hey Portal" (aka the name of Facebook's hardware division) followed by the name of someone on their Facebook friends list This must be done twice per friend, and the process can be repeated with up to 10 friend names

However, recording does not earn many Zuckerbachs; one set of voice recordings earns 200 points, which can be cashed out only when 1,000 points are reached; via PayPal, the reward is $5 Facebook says that users can record up to five sets, so apparently $5 is the maximum amount

In other words, unless you're content to eat a Big Mac on Facebook's dime, you won't get much for your time

In the Viewpoints instructional video, Facebook states that it will keep private and secure the insights and information you choose to share However, Facebook does not have an exemplary track record with respect to user data privacy

Pronunciations is available to US users who are at least 18 years old and have at least 75 Facebook friends It is currently rolling out its Viewpoints app for Android and iOS
