The Final Fantasy 7 Remake Demo is here: How to Get It Now on PS4

"Final Fantasy 7 Remake" is just over a month away from release, but if you can't wait that long (and who can?), then you're in luck. This morning, Square Enix released a demo of Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS4.

Don't worry. Even if you're stuck at work or school right now, we'll show you how to download and play it as soon as you get home.

As the name suggests, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a remake of one of the most beloved JRPGs of all time. But Final Fantasy 7 Remake is more than just a graphical upgrade; it is a complete redesign of the original game from cover to cover, complete with a fully redesigned 3D world to explore, a completely rewritten voice-acted script, and a new real-time combat system.

We got a demo of the Final Fantasy 7 remake at E3, and it is well worth your time. I went into the experience quite skeptical, but by the end I was a believer. The amount of care and refinement that Square Enix has put into this game is impressive, and anyone who has fond memories of playing it when it was released will almost certainly be pleased.

In any case, the demo lasts about two hours and allows you to experience the first chapter of the game, the bombing mission at the Shinra factory. In this mission, you control Cloud Strife and Barrett Wallace as they explore the reactor, fight off human and robotic enemies, and explain how Shinra is depleting the Earth's life energy for profit. The scene is similar to the explosion scene in the original "FFVII," but this time it is longer and more detailed.

All you need to download the game later is a computer or smartphone. First, go to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Demo page on the PlayStation Store. Since it is free, click on the "Try Free Demo" button. You will then be prompted to access the download list. Do so. (If not, click on the avatar in the upper right corner, then click on the download list.)

For those of you who have never used the PlayStation Store download list/queue feature, it is a convenient way to start downloading while you are out and about. The latest game you purchased (or got for free) will appear at the top of your download list; select the "Download to PS4" option; when your PS4 is turned on, it will automatically download the Final Fantasy VII Remake demo.

There is one catch, of course: if the PS4 is not turned on or in hibernation mode, the download queue will not magically turn on. Many people keep their PS4 in rest mode while they're out and about, so theoretically, you could be playing the demo the moment you walk in the door tonight. If not, the best bet is to send an email to those who got home first and ask them to turn on their PS4.
