PS5 video shows the gorgeous user interface we want

When the PS5 launches later this year, the first thing gamers will see will be the main menu, and it's nice to see this sleek new concept video showing what the PS5 UI should look like.

Paweł Durczok shows us what the PS5 UI looks like thanks to a new video shared by user paulo1manso on Reddit (via T3).

This UI looks similar to the existing crosshair menu on the PS4 and the original PS3 menu. However, the large images and large tiles make good use of space, and large chunks of the menu move out of the way as you select games and apps; the R1 and L1 buttons let you switch between windows of different genres, though I know I want to play games of a particular genre, This is useful when you know you want to play a game of a particular genre, but want to check your collection before deciding.

A sub-menu, which Durczok's design demonstrates in The Last of Us 2, displays basic status information such as play time, trophy progress, SSD storage space, number of add-ons downloaded, and how many of your friends have the game

Also, the game will display the game's status.

It also shows the user loading a specific save file from the game, rather than entering the in-game menu or resuming from the last session played. This is useful when you want to retry something from a previous save file, or when you are playing two different game campaigns at the same time (one alone, the other in co-op).

In the second video, you can see how the tiles move between the square tiles. Each tile comes with a large background image rather than sticking to the currently applied wallpaper. The bottom image also shows a notification popup and a timer bar at the bottom.

Some purported actual leaks of the PS5 menu have also appeared. The following one, posted on Slashleaks in January, looks a bit like Durczok's design, but mostly like the existing PS4 menu.

Overall, Durczok's concept is great, but it is not as official as we would like it to be. Sony's actual menu will likely be more visually constrained than this, even if it offers similar options. However, we will know for sure what the PS5 interface will look like when the console arrives this holiday season.
