The over-the-ear wireless AirPods headphones appear to be the first Apple-branded 'phones of this kind, and based on a new leak, may be coming quite soon.

The leak itself, spotted by 9to5Mac, is a pair of icons that will appear in the developer version of iOS 14. The icons look very much like the icons used to represent specific products in various parts of iOS.

The fact that there are two colors may indicate that Apple will offer the new headphones in both black and white versions; this is a first, as the AirPods and AirPods Pro are only available in the classic Apple white color, but the more subtle This would be a smart move that would be popular with customers looking for a more subtle color scheme. There is also a precedent for Apple to give buyers a choice, as Beats headphones, also owned by Apple, come in a variety of colors.

The AirPods Pro are true wireless headphones with great noise cancellation and sound quality. That said, over-the-ear headphones with the same features and maybe some new tricks will definitely pique our interest. This may be Apple's attempt to make a bite into a market currently dominated by Bose's QuietComfort 35 II headphones and Sony's WH-1000XM3.

Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known Apple analyst who accurately predicts the company's moves, first mentioned Apple's rumored over-ear headphones in January. The "phone" was later named "AirPods X" in a leaked Target product listing and was also priced at $399.

The over-the-ear AirPods will appear with iOS 14 and could debut around September along with the iPhone 12. Of course, the Coronavirus incident could ruin Apple's plans, but we still expect these headphones to be available by the end of the year.
