PS5's backward compatibility is much better than we initially thought

During the announcement of the PS5 technical specifications this week, Sony seemed to indicate that only the top 100 most played PS4 titles would be optimized to run on the new console. Sony made the important announcement earlier in the week, which is great news for users looking to purchase a PS5.

In an updated PlayStation Blog post, Sony stated that they "believe the overwhelming majority of the more than 4,000 PS4 titles will be playable on PS5." Thus, everything from popular titles like "Uncharted 4," "Spider-Man," and "Bloodborne" to new and upcoming PS4 games like "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare" and "Cyberpunk 2077" will be available on the PS5.

It also mentions that backward compatible PS4 titles will run at "boosted frequencies" on the PS5, which should result in better frame rates and higher resolutions.

"We have already tested hundreds of titles and are preparing to test thousands more for launch.

The PS4's full backward compatibility could bring the PS5 closer to parity with the Xbox Series X. The Xbox Series X already promises to play all Xbox One games as well as Xbox 360 and Xbox games optimized for backward compatibility.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X are quite similar in terms of specs, with Microsoft's console boasting a slightly larger SSD and a more powerful GPU. We look forward to seeing both consoles in stores this holiday season and seeing how the new and old games perform in the real world.
