The Xbox Series X will likely be less expensive than the PS5 at launch, thanks to Xbox's flexible monthly purchase option.

Microsoft confirmed that it will sell the new console through its Xbox All Access service, with Xbox boss Phil Spencer telling IGN (via BGR) We previously knew that existing All Access customers could upgrade to Series X, and this is confirmation that the service will continue in full on the new generation of hardware.

Xbox All Access is a subscription service that allows customers to essentially lease an Xbox One S or Xbox One X console from Microsoft for two years, with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate starting at $20 per month. Online play is also available, and in addition to the 100+ games accessible through Game Pass, you are free to purchase additional titles for the console yourself.

Those who already subscribe to All Access can upgrade to the Xbox Series X by trading in their existing Xbox One console at the retailer where they purchased All Access when the Xbox Series X launches. However, you must have been an All Access subscriber for at least 18 months in order to upgrade.

Pricing for the Series X has not yet been determined, but Spencer says it will be decided soon, taking into account a number of factors. Sony has managed to reduce the price of the previous generation Xbox One by $100 with the PS4, and has gained a significant share of the console market as a result. Spencer also noted that Microsoft is not ignoring the economic difficulties caused by the current global crisis.

The Xbox Series X will be released this winter along with the PS5, hopefully without any delays due to coronavirus-related problems. In fact, the troubles caused by the viral pandemic may work in Xbox's favor, as gamers with limited savings may appreciate the flexibility offered by the All Access service.
