With the cancellation of E3 2020, the PS5 and Xbox Series X were not revealed in their entirety. The good news, however, is that we may get to see the final versions of these two new game consoles sooner than we might otherwise.

Daniel Ahmad, senior gaming industry analyst at Niko Partners, made this claim on Twitter (via GamesRadar). But he also added a disclaimer in another tweet that a coronavirus pandemic could change these plans at the last minute.

Prior to its cancellation due to coronavirus concerns, E3 2020 was scheduled for June 9-11. While the actual event will not take place in person or online, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), which runs the show, said it will instead promote partner announcements during this period to spread the news among fans.

Sony has no plans to appear at E3 2020 and has forfeited its 2019 event. Microsoft, however, could have held another series of events at the Microsoft Theater, located across the street from the LA Convention Center, the main venue for E3.

This was disappointing for those eagerly awaiting a complete showcase of the next generation of gaming consoles. Microsoft had already shown off the Xbox Series X in all its boxy glory, but only showed a tech demo of "Gears of War 5" and no detailed game footage to accompany it; one would have expected to see much more at E3.

Sony, on the other hand, only showed off its DualSense controller design, giving us a closer look at the concept design rather than an official, finished console.

We saw some footage of the PS5 game Observer: however, this is not a new PS5-exclusive game, but a remake of an older game. Therefore, Sony needs to catch up with Microsoft with regard to revealing more details about the console.

But if Ahmad's tweet is any indication, we may be seeing the final design of the PS5 a month or so earlier than previously expected. And hopefully, there will be a large number of console exclusives to go along with it.

According to one source (speaking to the Video Games Chronicle), Sony has recently been aiming for a May reveal for the PS5, which would fit with Ahmad's vague timeline. Microsoft was also planning events inside and outside of E3, including in May. However, as Ahmad's tweet reminds us, these plans may have been canceled or changed very recently.

This news, of course, does not only apply to Sony and Microsoft: instead of an intense news week like E3, we can expect exciting announcements for a long period between now and the end of summer. And as the end of the year approaches, we eagerly await the actual retail release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X. However, there are indications that the PS5 may be available in more limited numbers than we had hoped.
