How to Get Total War: Shogun2 for Free Now — and How to Get More Games Cheaply

Now, people need to stay home to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, and the WHO agrees.

Now Sega is doing its part by offering players a free copy of "Total War: Shogun 2" on Steam. This massive turn-based strategy title may keep you busy until the blockade is over. But even if it doesn't, Sega has also slashed prices on other popular titles in the Total War series.

This information comes from the official "Total War" website, which revealed the giveaway on April 24.

"The past few weeks have brought unimaginable challenges for many of us, but the incredible collective effort of the global community to overcome this adversity has been truly inspiring," said "Total War" Community Content Editor Ella McConnell, Community Content Editor of Total War, wrote." With this in mind, we would like to continue to encourage everyone to stay home and save lives by giving gifts to make this difficult situation a little easier."

That pretty much says it all: Total War: Shogun 2 is currently free on Steam. To get it, simply visit the link and add it to your account. You can download it at any time, and once you add it to your account, it's yours forever. The offer is valid as of April 27 at 1pm EST and will last until May 4 at 1pm EST.

Full disclosure: At the time of this writing, Steam was advertising the game as free, but claimed that adding it to your shopping cart would cost $29.99. This is probably a minor bug and will be resolved within a few hours.

Unfortunately, just as the game is not free as planned, the associated sale has not yet begun. Sega advertises that "select historical Total War games and DLC" are available at a discount, but we will have to wait and see which games are available and for how much. We do know that "Three Kingdoms," "Rome," and "Warhammer" are not included in the sale, while the DLC for "Total War: Shogun 2" will be 75% off the regular price.

For those who have never played the series, Total War is a grand strategy game franchise in which players play out a long campaign on a vast map. Managing resources and deploying troops on the world map is often just as important as actually engaging in direct tactical combat with the enemy. As the name suggests, Shogun 2 is set in 16th century Japan, where players are challenged to rise from local warlord to military ruler of the country.

If you like grand strategy, or if you haven't tried it yet and think now might be a good time to give it a try, there is nothing to lose by downloading "Shogun 2." It is a difficult and complex game with a steep learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it is a very rewarding and satisfying experience. And if grand strategy isn't your thing, Tom's Guide lists the best free PC games in every genre.
