Nvidia Ampere shows how gaming PCs will leap the PS5 and Xbox series Xbox

Nvidia is expected to take the cover off its next-generation graphics architecture, Ampere, at its upcoming virtual conference, GTC 2020. And it may give us a glimpse into the future of Nvidia's upcoming GeForce graphics cards.

The graphics giant had planned to hold its GTC event on May 14, but the coronavirus outbreak forced Nvidia to change the GTC to an online streaming event to give fans a glimpse of what Nvidia has been working on. While Nvidia will almost certainly announce new GPUs, there are a few disappointing developments.

Since GTC is more of an event for developers and IT specialists, the graphics cards that Nvidia will likely announce will most likely be GPUs for data centers and servers. Therefore, unless you want to build an AI system, this GPU is probably not for you.

However, since Nvidia's graphics architecture spans all graphics cards and chips, a look at Ampere's showcase will give you an idea of the technology behind the upcoming GeForce lineup, which may be called the 3000 series. We're going to be looking at the next generation GeForce lineup, which could be called the 3000 series. And we expect significant performance improvements across the board in the next generation of GeForce GPUs.

According to our sister site Tom's Hardware, Ampere is slated to deliver a 50% performance boost over the Turing architecture used by the current GeForce RTX 2000 series graphics card lineup. Therefore, we can expect not only improved graphics performance at 4K and 1080p resolutions, but also improved ray tracing performance with the hardware supported by Nvidia's GeForce RTX cards.

We expect mid-range graphics cards like the GeForce RTX 2060 to be powerful enough to run games at at least 60 frames per second at 4K resolution with full use of all settings. This is something the high-end GeForce RTX 2080 Ti may struggle with for some time.

Since the PS5 and Xbox Series X are slated to be very powerful consoles, the Amperage should deliver impressive performance. Therefore, PC gamers will want hardware that will allow their machines to stay ahead of the next generation of consoles.

When it comes to top-end graphics cards like the GeForce RTX 3080, expect Nvidia to offer something special. We would also expect Nvidia to build on its deep learning supersampling technology.

Ampere is not expected to offer dramatic gains in performance and features like the Turing architecture on the Polaris architecture, which sits below graphics cards like the GeForce GTX 1080. However, for those looking to build a new PC towards the end of the year, Ampere will produce a graphics card with impressive performance.
