Fortnite on PS5 and Xbox Series X: What You Need To Know

Fortnite will not be night-night on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest showcase revealed that the popular online builder/shooter will be for next-gen consoles. The studio announced the news in a blog post, which aimed to clear up any concerns or misconceptions about what this could mean.

First, "Fortnite" will remain "Fortnite"; don't worry about having to ditch the past, as Epic says the game will be no different on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Epic says "all current and next-generation consoles, including platforms," so next-gen owners will be able to play online with non-updated users.

Also, Epic's blog states that "we plan to support cross-progression across console generations and platforms, so your account, progress, and items will carry over," so there is no need to start playing from scratch.

As for what improvements we will see on these consoles, Epic also stated that they will "migrate Fortnite to Unreal Engine 5 in mid-2021" after initially releasing it on UE4. No release date has been given yet, but continuing to offer Fortnite on UE4 should shorten development time; check out our Unreal Engine 5 gameplay video coverage for the first glimpse of PS5 gameplay.

Epic hasn't forgotten about PS4 and Xbox One owners either. The post notes that the company plans to "continue support for existing platforms alongside support for next generation consoles."
