Civilization 6 just Went Free on pc — How to Get It Now

Grand Theft Auto V is dead. Long live Civilization VI. the Epic Games Store, a digital storefront that competes with the likes of Steam and Origin, has been giving away a free game every week since 2018. Last week, Epic gave away one of its biggest titles to date, "Grand Theft Auto V,"

and while that sale has ended, this week's selection will theoretically keep you going even longer. Civilization VI is a massive open-ended strategy game that spans the entire history of the world and is free to play if you have an Epic Games account.

The Epic Games store gives away one free game a week, some indie favorites like "Abzu" and some blockbuster hits like "Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Still, "GTAV" is one of the most popular games Epic has ever distributed, and "Civilization VI" is also one of the most beloved entries in the massive franchise.

To get the game, simply visit the Civilization VI page on the Epic Games Store until 11 a.m. ET on May 28. Click the "Get" button where the regular price is displayed and log in to your account. The game will now be added to your library and you are free to install it. You are now done. Once you have claimed Civilization VI, it will be permanently registered in your account.

Keep in mind that you will need to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your account in order to access the game.

Of course, the Epic Games Store is not offering these games out of the purest good will; as the Epic Games Store's library grows, you may find yourself purchasing future games from Epic instead of Steam or Origin. We may even be tempted to buy future games from Epic instead of Steam or Origin. Furthermore, "Civilization VI" has at least $40 worth of paid DLC, which adds civilizations such as the Mayans and Ethiopians. Of course, not all free "Civilization VI" players will pick up the DLC, but many will.

For those who have never played a Civilization game, the Civilization games are part of a long-running turn-based strategy series. You choose one of history's great civilizations - the Egyptians, the Mongols, the Spanish, etc. - and rule it from the Stone Age to the near future. You can conquer the world with your military might or surpass your rivals with diplomacy and technology. The game also offers a variety of difficulty levels and game lengths, making it appealing to both strategy game novices and those familiar with wargames.

We don't know what games Epic will offer next, but the past few weeks have skewed toward major hits rather than mid-budget or indie titles. Next week's selection could be even bigger games, or it could be a good opportunity to spotlight something more niche.
