Today's (June 11) PS5 event showcased many of the most anticipated titles, but there was also a surprise hardware announcement at the end. We can finally put to rest months of speculation, not to mention the various fan renderings, ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous.

We know for a fact that the PS5 will be a two-tone, black and white, vertical gaming console with two white fins on the sides and one rounded rectangle in the center. There will also be a symmetrical Digital Edition and an asymmetrical Standard Edition that will include a disk drive.

Fans were quick to express their excitement, disapproval, and off-color remarks on the Internet; even the staff of Tom's Guide had considerable disagreement, if not immediate, as soon as the first pictures were released.

Personally, I think the PS5 is an abomination. That said, I thought the same thing about the dual-sense controller, and I expected the console to have a generally similar design, so I'm not that surprised. my reaction in a Slack chat was:

"That's the ugliest thing I've ever seen. It's a video game console."

As far as we know, others on the Internet share our ambivalence.

As a matter of fact, the majority of the reaction posts I found were all joke posts comparing PS5 to everything from Wally's Eve to a white binder with black pages. But even that tells you something. If fans absolutely despised the appearance of the PS5, they would be vocal about it, rather than simply making jokes.

Apparently I'm in the minority here, because I don't particularly care about the PS5's appearance, and I don't much care, because as everything from the PS3 to the Xbox One has proven, consoles don't need to look good, and as far as the first big showcase of the PS5 is concerned, Sony's latest game console looks like it could do just that.
