Umbrella Academy Season 2 groovily kicks off this summer A dysfunctional superhero family will get another chance to prevent a world-destroying apocalypse, but first they must figure out life in the 1960s
The first season of Umbrella Academy was one of Netflix's most popular shows in 2019, ranking third behind Stranger Things and The Witcher The series, based on a comic book by Dark Horse, centers on the seven adopted Hargreaves siblings, who were among a group of children born simultaneously on October 1, 1989, during a mysterious global phenomenon
As adults, they reunite for the funeral of their father, Sir Reginald When they learn that the apocalypse is imminent, they find it difficult to put aside their long-held distrust and resentment and work together to prevent a catastrophe Brothers, you know We can't live without them, and we can't save the world without them
In the finale, the apocalypse has happened, but the siblings were able to hit the reset button by traveling back in time to their teenage selves But can they find a way to stop the apocalypse in this new timeline?
Everything we know about Umbrella Academy Season 2, including release date, cast, and plot
Umbrella Academy Season 2 will be released on July 31
Netflix revealed the release date on May 18 with a video worthy of isolation, recreating scenes from Season 1 and showing the cast dancing at home
The July release date is a bit later than we had speculated (June), but is in line with the production schedule Filming was completed in November 2019, and the show moved into visual effects, editing, and other post-production processes
In February, the show's Twitter account posted a series of mini-posters, essentially giving us a chance to get our favorite characters' new phone lock screens The last tweet/poster had an ominous message: "When will they"
The Hargreaves siblings are all returning for Season 2, so the returning cast includes Ellen Page (Vanya/Number 7), Tom Hopper (Luther/Number 1), David Castaneda (Diego/Number 2), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison/Number 3), Robert Sheehan (Klaus/Number 4), Aidan Gallagher (Number 5) and Justin H Min (Ben/Number 6)
Netflix confirmed the return of the main cast by tweeting a series of posters, led by the poster "When are they"
Season 1 ended with the siblings time-traveling back to their teenage selves, so perhaps we will see younger versions of the characters played by TJ McGibbon, Cameron Brodeur, Blake Tarabis, Eden Cupid, Dante Albidon, and Ethan Phan Id
Colm Feore as Sir Reginald Hargreaves and Jordan Claire Robbins as Grace Hargreaves could also return, either in flashback or ghost form
A bigger question mark is the status of time-traveling assassins Cha Cha (Mary J Blige) and Hazel (Cameron Britton) The former died in the apocalypse, while the latter escaped with his girlfriend Agnes (Sheila McCarthy) However, they and their boss, Handler (Kate Walsh), may also return, as the program has hit the reset button
Umbrella Academy Season 2 adds new cast members, including Ritu Arya ("Humans"), Yusuf Gatewood ("The Good Omens"), and Marin Ireland ("Y")
The official Umbrella Academy Twitter account revealed more details about the new characters:
All appear to be in their thirties, so Lila, Raymond, and Sissy, like the Hargreaves children, were born simultaneously on October 1, 1989 They may have been among the 43 babies born at the same time on October 1, 1989
Also new for season 2 is a trio of cold-blooded Swedish assassins played by Tom Sinclair, Chris Holden-Reed, and Jason Bryden
Plot details for Umbrella Academy Season 2 are being kept under wraps, but it is likely to be a continuation of Season 1 In the finale, Vanya unleashed a force (previously believed to be nonexistent) and blew up the moon As a result, debris fell to Earth, triggering an apocalypse Number Five used his time travel ability to save his siblings by teleporting them back in time, thereby returning them to their teenage years
This ending differs from the comics, so who knows what will happen
"The truth is, we don't know where they are Showrunner Steve Blackman told The Hollywood Reporter
"I really wanted this to be a cliffhanger of the highest order What happened? It gives us a lot of openness and room to tell the best story we can next year But yes, the apocalypse was not resolved They didn't save the world This is a slight alteration of the comic For me, it was the right Netflix cliffhanger I want people to say in the off-season, 'I want to know what happened,' and it will become clear when they watch season two"
While the show deviates from the comics, the producers are still referencing the source material Gerard Way and Gabriel Barr are still writing the comic book series (they have written three of the eight graphic novels), but they have given Blackman and the writers a roadmap so it won't be a "Game of Thrones"/George R R Martin situation Id
The first season loosely covers the events of the first comic book volume and parts of the second volume Season 2 of "Umbrella Academy" is also pulled from Volume 2, "Dallas
In "Dallas," Number Five and Allison travel back in time to assassinate President John F Kennedy; according to Entertainment Weekly, Hargreaves travels back to Dallas in the 1960s However, because Number Five cannot fully control their time-bending powers, each of them travels back in time to a slightly different point in time The Five have to reunite their team to try to prevent the apocalypse (again)
What many fans (myself included) would like to see is a deeper exploration of the Hargreaves siblings' powers Vanya has just discovered her power, and the big question is whether she will be able to control it Klaus has added a twist to his ability to interact with the dead: by connecting with his ghost brother Ben, he can influence Ben in the real world The duo has only scratched the surface of this new power
There is no trailer for Umbrella Academy Season 2 yet
Netflix has released 12 Umbrella Academy Season 2 photos We also get a glimpse of the Swedish assassin trio
