PS5 could be the biggest console yet - and it's not good

The design of the PS5 is still sinking in for some who were shocked by the shocking appearance of Sony's upcoming game console. While the look is certainly distinctive, the PS5 appears to be one of the largest gaming consoles we've ever seen.

A post on the Reddit community r/absoluteunits (via The Tech Chap on Twitter) shows a comparison between the PS5, Xbox One X, and Nintendo Switch Lite. This is not an actual photo, but a rendering designed using the known dimensions of the console, so it may not be 100% accurate; one thing is for sure, this is a beast of a console. If the comments are to be believed, it appears to be even larger than the original PS3.

Unfortunately, this image compares the PS5 to the Xbox One X, not its main competitor, the Xbox Series X. The Series X uses a cuboid design, which has been known since last year. Even if the Series X were to match the height and width of the PS5, its more regular shape would likely make it easier to store and position.

When the PS5 design was first unveiled, fans were divided. The tall, heavy-bottomed design with its two-tone "wings" was praised by some as unique, while others called it outrageously ugly. But the look of this console is less important than the fact that some gamers may not find a place to fit this futuristic high-rise console.

As these renderings suggest, the PS5 looks too big to be placed on a desk or to fit under a TV. Since the PS2, Sony has been releasing "slim" versions of its game consoles a year or two after their initial release. If you want the smallest console possible, the DIgital Edition is a good plan, as it is a bit slimmer, having omitted the Blu-ray drive.

You'll have to wait until November to see the PS5 and Xbox Series X for yourself and learn what they can literally do for each other. More announcements are expected from both camps in the summer, at which time we will learn more about the Series X's serious graphics capabilities and the behind-the-scenes tricks that make the PS5's loading times and audio a selling point. Pricing and release dates for either console have yet to be announced.
