iOS14 vs iPad OS14: The Biggest iPhone Features Missing in iPad

iOS14 and iPadOS14 revealed at WWDC gave users a lot of excitement, but about the differences between these platforms, the differences we've been learning for 1 week, and the differences are so tough and often confusing that we decided to pit iOS14 and iPadOS14 and see how they are We decided to take a look at what is different from the other

I'm not going to make a big deal from some differences, but iPhones and iPads sometimes have significantly different use cases — especially if you're out of the house, but some of these differences are due to Apple's internal deadline for some apps to push some features to iOS or iPadOS 141 version or later

The stack and smart stack are the same, but the iOS14 widget can be moved live with the app button Unfortunately, the widget is locked down in the Today view sidebar on the left side of the iPad's home screen

In theory, this could be because they already have a place on the home screen where your existing today's view mini app was sitting On the iPhone, Apple is not really anywhere on the home screen itself to put the widget, so if they're going to make a difference, they need to sit on the home screen, but this still doesn't feel like the right call The perfect solution, at least to my eyes, is to see where the widgets live on the 102-129-inch iPad screen where they can sit, then you don't always have to have today's view bar out there and get more control over your home screen The iPad has more screen space, why should you not be able to maximize it

You know how the iphone does your home screen housekeeping for you in iOS14, take all of your apps and for some reason by category it does not go into iPadOS14

And the App Library would have adapted well to this new environment, as iPadOS14 has all the major changes that make it look more macOS-like than before It would have been the Start menu version of iPadOS

I want to share my lock screen to prove it, but I have a sense of shame in that your iPad can have a series of poorly organized home screens of apps scattered everywhere, like a bunch of stuffed animals in a toddler's crib

In fact, it adds the ability to search for emojis in all non-Apple apps And while I'm happy that the emoji search bar arrives in iPadOS14, it's not in iOS14iPhone owners will have to waste time remembering how emoji sheets and sheets are laid out or looking for the right one

There is one way to explain this difference: When you use a connected keyboard, an emoji search will pop up on the ipad Most people don't think they're going to connect their iphone to an external keyboard often Sure, you can, but a small screen and a large keyboard will be for a messy, cumbersome experience

That said, a simple text field for searching doesn't take up much space on the screen And why should iPhone users be expected to rely on frequently used sheets?

I experienced this when talking about how iPadOS is like macOS: apps like Photos, notes, drives, etc move them from the tabs at the bottom of the screen to the sidebar section where the left menu pane is more Mac-like, and that change makes a lot of sense It's a great place to start The iPhone doesn't have space for them, so it's no big deal that iOS14 isn't getting them

Similarly, I am not shocked that the iphone does not get pencil support immediately Still, handwriting recognition of graffiti would have been a big deal for the iPhone I'm sure some people will want to write short messages at their fingertips It makes more sense to me than swipe typing

There is no new translation app in iPadOS14 that is used to help people speak across language barriers Some apps don't require an iPad version, but this confuses me If you've seen tourists in New York, especially if they're obviously dad, you know they use their iPad as a camera (they're not the only ones doing this, but it's a clear and visible trend) With it established, if tourists often carry it in public, wouldn't the iPad be the perfect device for translation?

Apple has not yet added a health app to the Ipad I don't know why, but maybe it's because you're storing sensitive personal information on as few devices as possible, but with the big screen on your iPad, all your sleep tracking data should be easier to digest

Similarly, Apple believes that the Ipad only needs a weather widget, because iPadOS14 does not have a full-fledged weather app Unique, right The iPad display can make it easy to see the weather in neighboring towns and cities on the same screen Hopefully this will be fixed soon

Also, iPadOS14 doesn't fill the iPad's calculator-shaped hole This is the biggest headscarf because the iPad's big screen is great for using all the buttons that appear when you rotate the iPhone's calculator app into landscape mode

iPadOS14 lacks some of the navigation and driving features that you get with iOS 14, so we're not going to hold it against Apple It is not Specifically, both iPhones and iPads get directions and help when it comes to cycling and electric vehicle routes

However, the iPad does not have a speed camera tool, which is used to track speed traps and camera behavior at red lights This is more useful to me than any of the other exclusions because routing tips can help you plan where you are going, but these more "in the moment" tips seem to be more suitable for iPhones that are used more often to navigate as you drive and travel It makes sense

The iPad is a bit too big for the driver to use, and I've never seen a dashboard mount big enough for 1 Similarly, the car keys (to unlock the car) are not on the iPad When it's time to unlock the prius, who wants to take out the iPad more than the iPhone

Half of these differences are due to how they relate to iPads and iPhones, and the rest can be submitted under "please, Apple, share the wealth""Comparing IOS14 to iPadOS14 is not about finding a 'winner', but about trying to get people's expectations for the public beta to debut on May 7 and the finished version to appear this fall Also, I hope Apple will read this and add some of the best features of ios14 to iPadOS14 sooner
