PS5 will offer "a whole new gameplay concept," Epic Games says

According to Epic Games' announcement, the PS5 will be the best gaming console ever. Previously, Epic Games boldly stated that the PS5 could surpass most gaming PCs with its Unreal Engine 5 demo and its ambitious SSD. Now, Epic is once again claiming that the PS5 is nothing short of a "masterpiece of system design"

and that the PS5 will be "a masterpiece of system design"

.

The news comes from a special PS5 issue of Official PlayStation Magazine, which hits newsstands tomorrow, and GamesRadar has a few snippets from it: Nick Penwarden, vice president of Epic Games, said of Sony's upcoming console: "[PlayStation 5] is a masterpiece of system design. Not only is it a quantum leap in computing and graphics performance, it is also revolutionary in terms of storage and data compression technology, offering players a new kind of game and experience.

According to Penwarden, the PS5's SSD has received much praise here as well for its potential to create a whole new kind of game. Kim Libreri, Epic's CTO, also shared his thoughts: [Next-generation graphics and processing power will not only make games more immersive, but will also enable fully dynamic environments and lighting, vastly improved physics, smarter AI, and richer multiplayer experience, will enable entirely new gameplay concepts that can be leveraged.

Both executives seem to believe that the PS5 will enable games that have been impossible on previous consoles, and perhaps even on gaming PCs. While we won't know the full context of both executives' statements until tomorrow, Epic seems to have a particularly strong interest in Sony's next-generation console.

Epic's Unreal Engine is available on all modern platforms, and there is no indication that it will run better on the PS5 than on the Xbox Series X or a powerful gaming PC. However, Epic developers and executives have repeatedly mentioned the PS5 when discussing improvements to the Unreal Engine on the next generation of consoles. But questions remain about what the PS5 can do that competing systems cannot.

In any case, the PS5 looks to be a very powerful system, and we know that Epic's funding source, Fortnite, will be available on the platform; Epic also has a bespoke tech demo, "Lumen in the Land of Nanite," which will show off PS 5 in the unique position of showing off its first gameplay. Of course, Lumen is not an actual game, but if it is, it sounds pretty interesting.
